Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp of a tooth (the living tissue inside the tooth containing nerves) is affected by decay or infection. In order to save the tooth, the pulp along with bacteria and any decay are removed and the resulting space is cleaned, shaped and filled with special, medicated dental materials. Afterwards a crown (cap) or other restoration is placed on the tooth to protect and restore it to full function.

Having a root canal done on a tooth is the treatment of choice to save a tooth that otherwise would die and has to be removed. Many patients believe that removing a tooth that has problems is the solution, but what not realized is that extracting (pulling) a tooth will ultimately be costlier and cause significant problems for adjacent teeth.

Root canal treatment is highly successful and usually lasts for lifetime in a healthy mouth.

Signs and symptoms for possible root canal therapy:

  • Severe toothache
  • Deep decay or blackish/pinkish discoloration of a tooth
  • Swelling and/or tenderness
  • An abscess (or pimple) on the gums
  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • Persistent sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Sometimes no symptoms are present
